Unprocessed Material
Identifier: HG-2023-023
Content Description
Jake Luppold, owner of the Senate Saloon in downtown Santa Rosa, promoted his plan to burn an automobile on election night in October 1908. The newspaper article was then picked up nationally, and Luppold received letters from readers around the nation, including Chicago, Indianapolis, Arizona, Washington, and many cities within California. Many of the letters in this collection are opinion letters against the burning of the automobile altogether, while some advise Luppold to gift the car to charity or to the senders themselves.
